Matthew Hopkins (c. 1620 – 12 August 1647) was an English witch-hunter whose career flourished during the English Civil War.He claimed to hold the office of Witchfinder General, although that title was never bestowed by Parliament.His activities mainly took place in East Anglia.. The characters in this book (some real and some fictional) are evoked with sympathy and insight. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness. Jennet's father finds most of the proceedings hysterical and unorthodox (though not for the reasons we do), but her brother falls in love with Abigail Williams, the instigator of that famous paranoid tragedy, and together they take over his father's work throughout New England. In a great final showdown between old superstition and new science, Jennet decides to have herself accused of witchcraft in order to disprove its existence. This is a historical romp that makes most other novels bearing that description seem like a retroactive wriggle.
