When I applied to the Master of Education (MAED) program, I had just transitioned from management back to being an instructor. I was good at it. For any goals to be successful, the one who sets the goal needs to have a sense of purpose and interest, the commitment reflects the importance of the goal (Locke and Latham, 2006). In a way, I felt trapped. In a way, I felt trapped. A major goal as a teacher was to have a lasting impact on others. I yearned to make a difference in the world and to see a greater impact. Since I am an educator, I also knew I wanted to focus on how to integrate technology with education.

So when I applied to Michigan State’s Master of Arts in Educational Technology (MAET) program, my main goal was to earn my master’s. Therefore, I decided to concentrate my energy on improving my teaching skills. With this drive, I set goals to improve my skills in instructional design and bridge the gap in my understanding between technology, leadership and education.

Ultimately, Kent Career Technical Center offered me a position as an instructor teaching computer programming. to school with different prior knowledge, motivation, self-images and persistence in the face of setbacks. Diving deeper into this goal, my hope was to become a change agent and to provide leadership in the integration of technology and education. This was a little difficult to start as, full disclosure, I had completely forgotten that I even wrote a goals plan when I applied for the program. We know that students come to school with different skills and abilities. I wanted to explore how technology can support student understanding while assisting instructors to save time on functions where technology can improve efficiencies. This makes it a good time to look back on the goals I had at the beginning of this journey and reflect on how they have changed. My goal is now to prepare students for their future by teaching them to be better problem solvers and innovators and to first consider the big picture of a lesson before choosing the best tools for teaching it and to create an atmosphere where students aren’t afraid to fail and are motivated to work hard.
