These men are in control of everything in the city, including the homes where the townspeople live. It is a city filled with sorrow. We swiftly meet the Witch, Xan, 500 years old and quite unaware that anyone thinks she wants to harm them. This novel is written in the past tense and is narrated largely by a third-person omniscient narrator. How many children whisk off to fairyland in old stories and the parents are quite ignored? . This means that Xan isn’t considering how to handle Luna’s magic, and is instead just ignoring that it’s a problem at all. The baby grows full of magic, and Xan decides she must adopt Luna herself, adding her to a little family including Fyrian, a Perfectly Tiny Dragon, and Glerk, a grumpy, poetical bog monster. But in doing so, Xan deprives herself of important information—namely, that Antain could tell her about the Day of Sacrifice and why she finds a baby in the clearing every year. She names the baby Luna and carries the child back to her home in the middle of the forest. So I liked her too.

This narrator begins to speak for the Protectorate as a whole and provides readers with an understanding of the cultural beliefs in the city.
