However, I advise them that when they have set their outcome goals, they should stop focusing on the outcome goal (or end goal) and really focus daily on their process and performance goals which are the behaviors and standards that will get them to their end goal. They can be achieved relatively easily because you have already obtained them previously. In business and competitive sports, outcome goals may be goals like winning a championship or winning a certain % of the market or hitting a certain sales target. But the problem with only having type A goals is that they never excite you. What would be different? Without the emotion, the goal becomes meaningless to us. But it takes courage, discipline, and leadership to do your process and performance goals which will lead you to victory. You need all three working together to reach your ultimate goal. You aren’t going to feel like you’ve benefited a huge amount by achieving them, and the reward will often seem not so exciting to you. A short-term goal might be something you can achieve in one to three months. A high school student may set an outcome goal to become a doctor. It will be extremely hard to feel inspired to achieve this type of goal because it doesn’t trigger your deepest desires. Outcomes goals are specific and spell out the results you hope to achieve in the end.

They are the key to achieving your dreams. Imagine you take a trip with some friends in your car but have no idea of where you’re going or what you’re doing. Long-term goals help motivate and focus us on the big picture. Process goals are particularly helpful for weight loss because they help you focus on changing behaviors and habits that are necessary for losing weight. If you try to make it a short term goal , you are not going to meet it; you are going to be exhausted for having try and then you will feel bad for having failed. You need all three working together to reach your ultimate goal. What if we got the person to think about how their life would be if they continued living that lifestyle for the next 5,10, or 20 years. The process goal for losing weight may include reducing calories, riding your bicycle, and drinking lots of water. Having that same approach to things in your life will create similar feelings.
